If, like us, you tend to carefully assess your home at the beginning of a new year, looking for ways to spruce up a space or inspiration for a spring project, you’re in luck: according to six designers we spoke with, 2019 brings a variety of chic and refreshing trends worth trying. Here, our experts share the design shifts they’re excited to see take hold in the coming year, from second kitchens to embracing maximalism to a migration toward moodier palettes—and more.

Bringing the outdoors in, and vice versa. “As technology usurps much of our daily lives, and we spend more time working inside, we’re starting to blur the lines between indoors and out. A simple way to accomplish this is by adding plants to our interiors: succulents, air plants, giant palms, and fresh flowers. We’re also opening up the walls from the inside out, moving walls, and adding Nano walls (folding glass walls) and sliding doors that open onto porches, lanais, and patios. There’s also a gravitation toward true outdoor living rooms that are suitable for long conversations and welcome lounging.” —Lucy Penfield of Lucy Interior Design in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Mixing your metals and finishes. “The concept of every finish being the same is over. When you mix your metals in a curated way throughout your space, it doesn’t look like a mistake; it creates a layered look that has character. Your faucet doesn’t have to match your island chandelier or cabinet hardware. Instead, choose no more than three per room. Saying hello to an extra kitchen. “We’ve all gotten on board with the open concept, and that’s made the kitchen party central. But that also means dishes are piling up in the sink and the stove and oven can heat up the whole room. I’ve started designing homes with a workspace behind the beautiful kitchen. These spaces feature an extra dishwasher, cabinetry, ovens, and an extra sink. A dirty kitchen allows for prep and cleanup to be tucked away while the kitchen is open for your guests to linger.” —Lori Paranjape of Redo Home + Design in Nashville, Tennessee

Welcoming the ombre gradient on walls. “We’ll be seeing a lot less white walls and trim in the coming year. Instead, we’re taking one color and expressing it in five different ways, working our way through a gradient, where the trim, wainscoting, walls, and ceiling are all variants of one color. Design: Lucy Interior Design

Reusing, repurposing, and salvaging. “Naturally, we are drawn to our history, a story of yesteryear, a connection to something that once was, but now has been repurposed. This is all about that connection to the earth and re-using old and reclaimed wood for furniture, doors, accent walls, and cabinets. We love remaking vintage textiles and worn rugs into lovely pillows, or upholstering a found stool or a French chair. We are all working hard to reduce our footprint and to be mindful of waste. This trend, that’s not fussy and perfect for our busy lives, does just that.” —Lucy Penfield of Lucy Interior Design in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Getting moody with color. “The most noticeable design trend for 2019 is shifting away from rooms that are all white and introducing moody, thought-evoking colors. You are going to start seeing kitchens, foyers, and bathrooms take on a much different look in the next year when it comes to richer color tones. After 10 years of my shop being Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White, I recently painted it Farrow and Ball Railings. It’s a black/blue that makes art and antiques really pop, even more so than on a white wall.” —Shaun Smith of Shaun Smith Home in New Orleans, Louisiana

Moving away from traditional kitchen cabinetry. “We’re seeing homeowners opting for built-ins and standalone pieces that have more of a furniture feel in lieu of standard cabinets. Think work tables as islands, open shelving, hanging pots, hoods that are plaster or brass, and paneled appliances. We’re trading in the pure utilitarian nature of kitchens of the past and focusing on a more decorative feel; it’s about time, considering the amount of waking hours we spend in these spaces.” —Zoe Feldman of Zoe Feldman Design in Washington, D.C.

Bringing 80s furniture back. “The trends from the decade of excess have returned, but thankfully we aren’t revisiting all of them. Designers are turning out huge, oversized furniture, like plush sofas and chunky glass tables with a brass bottom. We’re also seeing more textures that shimmer in sequins and velvets. One of my favorite ways to incorporate this trend is with fixtures, like a cool, huge brass and lucite acrylic chandelier. Make this trend work by choosing just one or two pieces to mix into your existing decor and keep your house looking balanced. This is also a great opportunity to scour consignment shops and antique stores for amazing vintage finds. The real thing is often better than the reproduction.” —Tula Summerford of Design by Tula in Raleigh, North Carolina

Taking it to the max. “There’s a departure from minimalism as its polar opposite, maximalism, takes a stand in the new year with its bold presence of personality. The trend is expressed in an explosion of color, texture, and pattern in the room. Think woven grassy texture living seamlessly with silks and rich velvets while playing on bright colors on everything—from Chintz to Damask prints. Another major key is having juxtaposing periods and style in the same space. For example, if you have a marble or lucite coffee table, think of doing a rustic wood dining table. Maximalism has an emotional and personal quality because you’re ultimately drawing on all the things you love.” —Shaun Smith of Shaun Smith Home in New Orleans, Louisiana

Replacing black and white with brown. “There’s a departure from cooler tones like grey or ‘greige’ in favor of deeper, richer colors, particularly chocolate brown. This earthy palette paired with dark woods allows for a sense of luxury, creating a nearly neutral look that foregoes the need for blacks and whites.” —Zoe Feldman of Zoe Feldman Design in Washington, D.C.

Bringing back your grandmother’s florals. “Floral fabrics and wallpaper are everywhere in a fresh, new way. This is a classic, British layered look with a mix of other patterns like stripes and small-scale prints. En suite bedrooms are featuring window treatments, wallpaper, and fabric all in the same pattern. A great way to make this trend work is to pull colors in the wallpaper into the rest of the room.” —Caroline Brackett of Caroline Brackett Studio of Design in Greenville, South Carolina

Embracing mismatched patterns. “As was evident on fashion runways in Alice & Olivia and Gucci, we’re seeing this trend of mismatching five different prints pop up in furniture design, too. When mismatching on your own, it all comes down to scale. How to get the most bang for the buck

Many homeowners opt for white and beige in baths because it’s safe. But that doesn’t mean it has to be boring! Designers use a few tricks of the trade to keep neutrals feel fresh. One trick is the magic of tone-on-tone—but with nuances. (That means mixing different shades of neutral, from light to dark.) Another trick is to pair neutrals with different textures.  Get this look by pairing a dimensional wallcovering or an embossed tile with a polished or smooth surface.

Stone has some hefty competition these days from porcelain tile. Porcelain is not confined to small format 4-, 6- or 12-inch tiles. Porcelain comes in slabs, some very thin yet sturdy, which can be applied to walls and floors. And with digital technology, manufacturers are able to replicate some of the most desirable marbles (Carrara or Calacatta) or granites.  The look of exotic-colored stones also is available with remarkable authenticity.

Temperature fluctuations are the enemy of fresh food. The more the temperature fluctuates, the more bacteria will grow. In a typical refrigerator, temperatures may swing by 4-7 degrees which is not ideal for fresh food storage.

A standard refrigerator doesn’t actually cool itself; a small valve opens and closes to pull air from the freezer in order to bring it’s temperature down. This can explain why you get expectantly frozen items in certain parts of your refrigerator. This shared single compressor cooling system leads to sub-optimal results for both the freezer and refrigerator compartment.

Temperature is just one component of keeping food fresh. Humidity also plays a critical role. In the refrigerator compartment the ideal environment is higher humidity, helping to avoid leeching moisture out of your fresh foods. In the freezer, dry air helps to avoid freezer burn and preserves food for longer.

Better Food Preservation with Dual Compressors and Dual Evaporators

With their new refrigerator lineup, Bosch has created the perfect environment for preserving food. Using a dual compressor and dual evaporator configuration, Bosch can independently control the temperature and humidity in each compartment. The result is the ideal environment for keeping you fresher for longer.

Bosch is the only manufacturer that offers dual compressors and dual evaporators in a freestanding refrigerator, a feature that’s typically only found in high-end built-in brands such as the Sub Zero fridge.

This adds up to longer lasting freshness for your food, wherever it’s stored.

SuperCool and SuperFreeze

Looking to cool large amounts of food, or quickly cool down some drinks right before entertaining? Use the SuperCool setting, which temporarily sets the fridge temperature to 34° F before returning to normal after two hours.

Meanwhile, the freezer features its own SuperFreeze Function. This will bring the freezer’s temperature to -8° F for a period of six hours before returning to its standard temperature. This is great for quickly freezing food items, or for returning items to their proper level of frozenness after the ride back from the grocery store in a hot car.

MultiAirFlow – Refigeration is More Than Cooling

In a standard refrigerator, a level of temperature deviation is expected as the fridge tries to keep the fridge temperature within an acceptable range. Mandi’s Kitchen Renovation Reveal

Last April, I had the amazing experience of selling our old home just seven days after getting the crazy idea that we should move to a new house. Finding a mint mid-century home with a sunken conversation pit—in your price range—will do that to a girl! To say it was a whirlwind week would be an understatement! I remember feeling heartbroken the night we signed papers with the buyer because we discovered the dream home which launched this crazy scheme was already under contract with another buyer. But man, was I excited that we had just sold our house so quickly! … And of course I was also a little worried about being homeless and living with my parents indefinitely.

I sat at my computer scrolling through the many homes I’d seen and checked out before. Nice. But lots of work. Or else absolutely perfect, but too much money. Finally, out of desperation, I clicked on an odd looking ’80s home I’d scrolled past lots of times, and was surprised when the wheels in my head starting turning. Nay, spinning! I couldn’t stop looking at this kitchen, imagining all of the things I could fairly easily change. I was intrigued and booked an appointment to view the home the next day.

After viewing the house, we were surprised at how perfectly it fit all of our family’s peculiar needs, so we made an offer, and I went back to the house to take measurements to put on AutoCAD after our offer was accepted. Yes, I am the psycho who had detailed drawings, to-scale plans, and budget sheets made up before we even closed on the house! I thought it would be fun to show you the initial kitchen drawing I made back then, and if you’re curious, you can see more of my kitchen plans and process on my blog here, here, here, and here.

Surprisingly, not many details changed from the ideas that had popped into my head that night that I viewed the home online for the first time. For budget reasons, I wanted to reuse as much from the original kitchen as possible, and because I was not a fan of the oak raised panel cabinetry, painting the cabinets white would allow them to fade to the background and not make much of a design statement. I also wanted to make the space feel much airier, so I decided to remove all of the upper cabinets completely, and only replace them with a single row of open shelving. As far as storage goes, I had plenty of cabinets left in the island and below the countertops (the lazy susan in the corner is amazing!). The cabinet I built above the fridge as well as the wall of shelving gave me the rest of the storage I needed. (Oh, and there’s a pantry closet behind the shelving wall.)

Because most of the kitchen would be white, I wanted to make sure there were plenty of texturally interesting things, but not in a cluttered way. The wide-open wall above the cabinets was the perfect place to add texture! I covered it completely with wide subway tiles, choosing a stackbond pattern to feel more contemporary than your average white subway tile wall. I agonized over what grout color to use and am really happy with the TEC Silverado grout, because it adds definition between the tiles without too much contrast. There’s also a lot of texture thanks to my open shelving. Everything on the shelves is white or glass, so the shelving doesn’t feel cluttered, yet there’s still interest there. All of the clean white is juxtaposed with some rustic wood elements, like the huge wall of shelving I built, and a vintage spice rack that repeats the style of the shelving wall. A wooden butcherblock countertop from Lumber Liquidators, wooden cabinet knobs, wooden stools, and wicker baskets all work together to add warmth, balancing out the stark coldness of white everywhere.

Literally the day we closed on the house, Phil and I began demo! I pulled out all of the carpet on the first floor, and for a date night, Phil and I busted out and removed all of the tile from the kitchen and hallway. Talk about romantic! Then my dad helped take off the old countertop and separate all of the cabinets. We reconfigured them so we could move the stove to a different wall, making more space for a main dining area in the eat-in kitchen. (We are using the formal dining room as a play room.)

Once everything was cleaned out, and the cabinets were positioned, it was so exciting to rebuild! My favorite project that I took on by myself was the shelving wall. I may add some rustic doors to parts of this shelving wall in the days to come, but I sure do love having easy access to dry goods and snacks, plus, who am I kidding? I love stuff, and these shelves let me rearrange my stuff in fun ways with each change of seasons.

The most exciting day of the rebuilding has to be the day my new stove was installed! I had only ever dreamed of owning such a beauty—six burners, dual-heat steam oven … forget about it. I love all of our new appliances, but this stove makes it easier for me to get out of bed in the morning. (Especially if I have ingredients for pancakes, bacon, and eggs in the fridge!) I still pinch myself every day I get to use this bad boy. I also am so glad we moved its location to this other wall. Our old stove was electric, so we had to run gas lines anyway, we may as well move the stove to a more convenient spot. Rerouting the exhaust vent wasn’t bad because the joists in the ceiling happened to run parallel with the stove wall. We plugged up the hole from the old vent with ventilation and covered it on the inside with drywall and tile, and covered the hole on the exterior with a metal plate and silicon until we’re able to patch the siding.

People often ask about the jars I use to store my food. They are Le Parfait brand, and you can find them lots of places online, but I’ve also had luck finding them at discount home stores such as Marshalls and HomeGoods. I used to have labels on every jar, but now I only have them on certain necessary ones that are easily mixed up. (Once I tried to make frosting using baking soda instead of powdered sugar!) I’m frequently moving the contents of a barely filled jar into a smaller one to free up the big jars, so things get shuffled around and labels just get to be annoying in that instance.

My girls and I begin every morning at the kitchen island. I sip coffee and answer their crazy questions while they usually eat eggs and toast or fruit and yogurt. We usually have lunch at the counter, too, but dinners happen at the round antique table that I scored on Craigslist. It has three leaves, so we can make it bigger for when we’re hosting friends and family, but most of the time it stays small like this.

I carried the traditional-rustic-meets-minimal-modern vibes to the dining area where I use the antique table alongside these elegant Lippa chairs from LexMod. The vintage booster seat gives this spot the perfect mix of old and new.

I sort of freaked out with excitement when I found this beautiful chandelier from Hinkley Lighting, because it so perfectly mixes a variety of styles I love: Bauhaus-inspired shiny chrome, funky ’70s curves and globe shapes, understated elegance that feels a bit traditional … Oh, and the clincher was that there were matching pendants perfectly sized for our kitchen island!

I can’t believe I’ve come this far without acknowledging my pink sink. I chose most of the materials because their were inexpensive and because they were safe enough that I knew I’d be happy with them for years to come. But I had to have a little fun somewhere! That’s where the pink sink comes in. This is an acrylic sink by Thermocast which is undermounted beneath our white Corian counters for the perfect pop of pink. I use a tray in the bottom of the sink to keep it from getting scratched up, but also to conveniently rinse dishes when things get piled up.With all of the new materials, I hadn’t considered how junky our old outlets and switches would be until I saw them alongside the new white walls and tile. Ugh. Details matter! So we installed new paddle switches, universal dimmers, and outlets from the Legrand Radiant line. The screwless wall plates are the perfect finishing touch and just fade to the background, letting my design choices take center stage. We also installed outlets with built-in nightlights in our halls and pathways, so we can easily sneak into the kitchen for midnight snacks!

Choosing a shade of white for our walls was a little stressful (even though I wrote an entire blog post about choosing white paint!), but I’m happy with Benjamin Moore’s Super White in our kitchen. It’s a particularly tricky space because there are a lot of white I don’t have control over, shade-wise, like our KitchenAid appliances, the dining chairs, the tiles, and to some extent, the countertops. Super White ended up being the perfect neutral white for this environment (not cool or warm) that felt very bright, but not as stark as untinted white would feel. It feels bright, crisp, and modern— perfectly at peace with the other white elements in the kitchen.

Lauren Li of interior design and decoration firm Sisällä guides us through her strategies for keeping and displaying sentimental items, and using beloved objects as forms of decoration.

Hey Lauren! What is your take on the Marie Kondo craze?

My take away after delving into the Konmari method is, don’t be too hard on yourself or you may live to regret it! Hold onto sentimental things that hold special memories, and instead of throwing them out, move them to a new spot in the house. Those pieces that ‘sparked joy’ when you first laid eyes on them may look a bit tired now, but just store them and bring them out in six months. You’ll feel that spark again and be so thankful you still have it.

Don’t go too extreme. For me, the most depressing thing about ‘Tidying Up with Marie Kondo’ is that an absolutely bare room is celebrated. No-one should live in a house so minimal that the rooms have absolutely no furniture or artwork (what is the purpose of an empty room?). In the process of throwing everything out, the soul of the space is thrown out too.

What’s your advice on storage solutions?

When storing sentimental pieces, keep a combination of closed and open storage. Pieces like vases, candles, ceramics and décor objects can be shown on display on open shelving and occasionally refreshed and swapped out with other pieces stored in cupboards.

What are your top tips on culling?

My top tips are only; keep what you love, and, if you haven’t worn or used an item in the last 12 months, it’s time to cull.

What favourite storage solutions do you turn to time and time again?

There are so many great storage solutions suited for different purposes: I use Blum storage for kitchen cupboards and joinery, Howards storage for make-up and jewellery and Metro storage systems for the garage and store rooms.

Hey Louella! What is your take on the Marie Kondo craze?

A tidy house is an easy house to read, and when you can read a space easily it has a calming effect on you. Marie Kondo is spot on! In saying that, I’m a magpie and I struggle with letting go of things!

My trick is to rotate things and to group things clearly. I block things into groups of colour and texture. I have shelves with groups of bits and bobs in whites, wood, orange for example. If I group them together it simplifies what you’re reading when you scan the space. It’s easier on the eye, and the brain.

When I worked in London for Terence Conran I remember his wise words, which were that if you want to organise a space, take everything out, and only put back what you really want/need.

What’s your advice on choosing storage solutions?

I love a good set of pigeon holes – they create order and structure. You can store and display things at the same time with a calm sense of order.

I also love the Spencer 2 Drawer cabinets from Officeworks in white. You can line them up along a shelf from easy filing!

Melbourne’s Flack studio are not known for their minimalist aesthetic, self identifying as ‘equal parts Gio Ponti and Vincent Van Duysen with a dash of Dame Edna…’! So it is refreshing to hear how a maximalist vibe can respond to the minimalist trend!

Hey David, what is your take on the Marie Kondo craze?

Firstly it’s important to remember it’s a craze. I’m a maximalist at heart – but I agree with the sentiment of only purchasing things of joy. The common mistake I witness when people are either setting up new homes or renovating – they want it to be perfect straight away, we always recommend layering a home slowly and through consideration.

Rather than thinking ‘will it bring me joy?’ – I ask clients to think about whether they will still love it in years to come – this will prevent costly mistakes and landfill.

Can you recommend a favourite storage product?

We love designing custom joinery – however when we specify furniture we can’t go past USM from Anibou or Vitsoe shelving units.

Carole Whiting Interiors and Design is a Melbourne based multi-disciplinary firm, with a particular knack for designing beautiful custom cabinetry, and squeezing the most out of a small space (remember this exquisite house?). Carole takes us through her strategies for keeping clutter to a minimum.

What are your top tips on culling?

It’s great to have a cull every year or two. But even better to stop buying things that you don’t need.
 Don’t buy ugly!  By that I mean, think about what you’re purchasing. If you are buying something – anything from a dress to a pair of scissors – think carefully first. If you have beautiful things, you are more likely to look after them, and love them for longer.

Can you offer advice on storage solutions?

Think about your storage needs. If you have the correct space for things, its much easier to be tidy. There needs to be a space specifically for each item. Give yourself some hanging space in your laundry for underwear or shirts to hang on a rainy day. 
Design it so you either don’t see it or it adds to the aesthetic of the space.

On the flip side – I usually give my clients a cupboard or drawer for the ‘I don’t know what to do with this’ things. We all have them – string, old keys, pens etc. BUT clean it out regularly. It’s a space for shoving things when
 you need a quick tidy up, but don’t let it get out of hand.

50 Unique U-Shaped Kitchens And Tips You Can Use From Them

A u-shaped kitchen is a highly coveted layout for a househunter since they offer so much space for cabinetry. The u-shaped layout places units around the cook on three sides with the top of the ‘u’ left open for a doorway or an open plan living room. U-shaped kitchens can be combined with dining areas or even a kitchen island if the width of the room allows. An open plan room often presents the opportunity to make one arm of the ‘u’ into a peninsula that can be accessed from both sides, such as for use as a breakfast bar or as a dual sided storage volume. Generally speaking, there are six types of kitchen layouts: The One Wall, Galley, L-shaped, U-shaped, Island and Peninsula. There are no strict positions in which to order the stove, fridge or sink, and a kitchen can be combinations of one or more of the typical layouts. For example, you could have an L-shaped kitchen with an island or a peninsula, or a galley kitchen that is linked at one end. In designing a functional kitchen, the kitchen work triangle should be considered, which means that the distance between the sink, stove and fridge should be no more than 1200mm apart. Though, the concept of the kitchen working triangle is now evolving further to take into account multiple cooks, as well as new gadgets and appliances. In comparison to when the concept originated in the 1940s, where kitchens were a utilitarian place typically home to the housewife, our kitchens and equality have come a long way. Microwaves, separate cook tops to ovens, prep stations with an additional mini sink and teamwork all interrupt the traditional triangle. As modern kitchens present an increase in dedicated task zones, secondary triangles become commonplace.

Designer: Mamm Design   Play with floor levels. This unique u-shaped kitchen is sunken below the floor level of the open plan living room, allowing onlookers a birds-eye view.

Visualizer: Bo/Sko   Colour coordinate upper units with the wall colour. The wall cabinets in this blue kitchen have been used as reference for the room’s paint colour. Colour coordinating the paint with the units in this way helps the space appear more open.

Source: The Burke Company   A different tack has been taken in this blue kitchen, with wall cabinets placed around the full u-shape. However, one side of the arrangement is open to the dining room, and windows run around the rest of the countertop level bringing plenty of airiness to the scheme. Cleaning the backsplash after cooking dinner in this kitchen becomes an exercise in window washing!

Visualizer: Anastasiia Kharuk   Forget the plinths. With the abundance of cabinets typical to a u-shaped kitchen you may be looking for new ways to help your design look more open and spacious. Leaving off the base plinths can help expand the look of your floor space – though do be prepared to get down low to clean out the recess regularly if you’re dropsy with your vegetable choppings.

Visualizer: Nika Vorotyntseva   Create a wrap around storage volume to an adjacent area. The tall height of the oven housing unit and fridge freezer housing has been continued around the corner into the lounge in this open plan home. The extension is used as a media unit surrounding the tv facing the lounge.

Visualizer: Korry Chan   Define edges with lighting. LED strips placed just beneath the lip of a kitchen countertop and wall units create an ambient glow.

Visualizer: MaSQ Architecture   Make a feature of a niche shelf by picking it out in a different colour. A dark wood tone adds sophisticated flair to an all white kitchen.

Visualizer: Design Squared   Match the baseboard to the backsplash. This grey and white kitchen brings in grey not only through a tiled backsplash but with a coordinated kickboard.

Designer: Poggenpohl   In a long open home, a mid-way u-shaped kitchen can be used to effectively divide the floor plan.

Designer: Harvey Jones   Bring in colour with countertop appliances and accessories. This red kitchen set looks great with warm rustic brick walls.

Visualizer: Tomasz Muszynski   Black appliances in a white kitchen look punchy and modern. This design has black pieces situated on each of the three straights of the u-shaped kitchen to maintain balance.

Designer: Scenario Architecture   Shortening the returns of a u-shaped kitchen can leave room for a fully-fledged dining set.

Designer: Libby Winberg Interiors   Let your budget inspire you rather than restrict. Choosing Scandinavian kitchen style can be a cost effective exercise, since the magic of the Scandi aesthetic is simplicity.

Visualizer: Black & Milk   Use every nook and cranny for storage in a tiny u-shaped kitchen. Shape shelves into the eaves.

Visualizer: Julian Malik & Magdalena Tutak-Malik   Tailor the design to suit your own lifestyle. One side of this setup has cabinets facing out to the living room where a wine rack on hand. A raised bench is in place where you can easily pop the cork.

Visualizer: Skereck Design   Build a lighting soffit. A wood effect soffit has been installed around the ceiling perimeter of this white kitchen, complete with recessed spotlights.

Designer: Athena Calderone   Photographer: Sarah Elliott   Where there is plenty of natural light, don’t be afraid to go dark with the cabinetry.

Designer: Davis Architects   Add hints of green with indoor plants, or add colour with kitchen stools.

Source: Fastighetsbyran   Take tiling to the top. This white kitchen has metro tiles stacked almost to the rafters. Dark grout accentuates the tile design.

Visualizer: Reform   Get wired – without any hassle. If you don’t want to punch holes in the ceiling for spotlights or install a lighting soffit, how about positioning some exposed bulb kitchen pendant lights. With exposed electrical wiring being on trend you can feel free to string wires from a single power point. If you fancy a bit of colour then go for lengths of brightly bound electrical wire; there’s the pick of the rainbow available out there.

Designer: Ande Bunbury Architects   Just can’t decide on a kitchen cabinet colour? No problem. Go multicoloured with Mondrian inspired interior design.

Visualizer: Recent Spaces   The golden touch. Take your kitchen scheme upmarket with a flurry of gold finishing touches. Try a gold faucet, cabinet handles, tile trims or planters. Leave out your best cooking oils too, they will decorate the countertop with their own golden essence.

Visualizer: Stanislav Kaminskyi   Forget making do with a tiny kitchen tv – go big using a projector.

Break with stereotypes. The positioning of the fridge with an adjacent oven at the neck of the ‘u’ in this layout is quite unconventional. The tall units at the back make the plan feel almost like a galley kitchen. The fridge and oven are often situated in tandem in modern kitchens, though some manufacturers warn that the proximity is detrimental to your fridge by making it work harder to achieve the desired internal temperature.

Visualizer: Alexander Shabalin   Select an extractor unit to be the main feature.

If you tire of colour schemes quickly, use easily replaceable items to colour the room. Keep bold colours confined to mugs, trays and tea towels to make a decor change gentle in effort and low on price.

Use similar tones but different materials. These coffee coloured wall cabinets match with the walnut wood grain below – yet the change in texture brings interest and makes the space appear less crowded.
